Song of Inspiring Visitors
said Stephen Sondheim, who knew
from his composing songs,
that the inspiring muses
don’t linger any longer
after ringing the doorbell
than does God.
This week, already our agendas
are jam-packed full with
work and other obligations,
so take your pen and cancel
as many as possible,
to free yourself to entertain
visitors bearing gifts.
Plump as spring’s full moon
are this week’s opportunities:
the Last Supper, Calvary Day,
the Passover and Easter Sunday.
Wisely soak up the gifts
of these precious holy days,
even if not able/inclined
to go church or synagogue.
Thursday, have a festive dinner
with family or friends.
Good Friday, go to a cemetery
for a silent meditative walk
among the hidden dead.
Saturday, recall and celebrate
joyfully a great escape in life.
Sunday, exult in the rising sun
and in endless sunrises
of your tomorrows
after your death.
